Some good news to mark International Childhood Cancer Day on 15 February 2025: the National Cancer Plan is becoming reality! The Swiss Parliament approved this proposal last year. Exactly one year ago, SPOG – together with other organisations – emphasised that Switzerland urgently needs a national cancer plan.
The decision to introduce a national cancer plan represents a milestone for Swiss cancer care. The first step has been taken towards developing a coordinated strategy to tackle cancer in all age groups.
Now we need to ensure that children and adolescents with cancer are properly represented in the new cancer plan. This is because childhood cancer differs from cancer in adults in various ways: children are affected by different types of tumours than adults, and the causes of disease are largely unknown. Although young patients have a high chance of recovery, the long-term effects of the disease and treatment can be serious – to learn more, please read our latest media release.
To give sufficient consideration to the specific needs of children and adolescents, it is necessary for patients, politicians, researchers and the healthcare sector to work hand in hand. To this end, SPOG is organising the second Stakeholder Meeting in collaboration with the Swiss Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (SSPHO).
