The importance of research and development in treating childhood cancer

Ongoing medical research and development are the key to better, safer and more effective treatment of cancer in children and adolescents. The Swiss Paediatric Oncology Group (SPOG) endeavours to advance science and to improve the chances of a cure and quality of life for our young patients.

Research and development activities in paediatric oncology are tremendously important for a number of reasons.

One of the main reasons is the need for continual medical research. Childhood cancer is complex and varied, and many aspects have not yet been researched. Continual medical research is the only way to gain a better understanding of the different types of childhood cancer, to identify new and more effective treatments and to improve existing therapies. Every new discovery brings us one step closer to the goal of curing every child and adolescent with cancer.

While the primary objective is to cure cancer, improving the quality of life of sick children and adolescents during and after their treatment is eminently important. Cancer treatments can have considerable side effects and long-term effects and greatly impair our young patients’ quality of life. By researching therapeutic approaches that reduce side effects and long-term effects and improve quality of life we can improve out patients’ well-being during their treatment and beyond.

Continual research and development in the field of paediatric oncology enable us to improve the survival rates of children and adolescents with cancer as a whole. Every new treatment, every improved medication and every innovative therapy can contribute towards increasing the chances of a cure for children and adolescents with cancer.

Thanks to the dedication and tireless work of researchers and doctors, substantial progress has already been made in research into childhood cancer. But our work is not yet done. Every child and every adolescent confronted with cancer deserves the best possible treatment and the greatest chance of a cure. And that’s what we work towards every single day.

Our vision is a future in which all children and adolescents with cancer can be cured. And we are convinced that research and development are the key to realising this vision. With your support we can continue to carry out innovative research and improve the lives of children and adolescents with cancer. Every donation, every form of support takes us one step closer to this goal.

Thank you for your support and your commitment to fighting childhood cancer.

Together we can make a difference and create a future in which no child has to live with cancer.
